Lumbar, Royal Talons, DirtClodFight, Mythological Horses

This has been another really good month here at Witch Ape Studio. We recorded a live show of The Anunnaki (Dave French’s other band that he plays bass and does vocals in.) who also plays drums for Brothers of the Sonic Cloth as well as Brokaw. Dave is busy fellow. We just Treefinished up mixing the new DirtClodFight this month as well as starting the mix for Big Trughk. Just last week we started the new record with Royal Talons.

Coming up at the top of May will be Aaron Edge’s new project LUMBAR with Mr. Mike Scheidt (Yob, Geistus, VHÖL) adding voice. Aaron Edge already tracked the drums, bass and guitars from his home in Portland, OR and anyone who knows the hell that this man has been going through lately can really appreciate his tenacity inspite of the horrendous health issue that he is facing. We are also going to be recording projects by Portland, Oregon / Anchorage, Alaska’s Mythological Horses as well as Andy Scheen’s new band and whom you may recall was the bassist for Seattle’s Swallow.  Eventually and  hopefully…….  Someday……. finish the new Heiress record. Hint, Hint.

News 4/16/2013

There are a few things happening around here. Firstly, tracking and mixing is done for the CALIGULA record, and words cannot express how much I love this band. We  just finished up the Caligula mixes a couple of nights ago here at Witch Ape Studio. You have no idea how killer this record is going to be. Being stoked is an understatement. Mr. Austin Hugill (drummer for Caligula) is so much of a force of nature that drum heads and cymbals cower in his presence. In other words, great job Austin! Be looking for more info from the Caligula facebook.

Secondly, the new DirtClodFight, who you may remember from Al Flipside’s  Flipside fanzine and record label from 20 plus years ago, have a new five song record in the can and Tad Doyle is currently putting the final touches on their album entitled “The Main Sequence” which purportedly chronicles the birth, life and death of a star such as our sun Sol. This album will be rich in texture and mood and will feature some guest musicians including YOB‘s Mike Scheidt and others. More to come from the DirtClodFight facebook.

Thirdly, and not the least of which is the news about Brothers of the Sonic Cloth being asked to join a few other bands you may have heard of to play a show.

BotSC will be joined by ex-TAD guitarist, Gary Thorstensen to play a few songs from the band TAD‘s God’s Balls, Salt Lick and 8-Way Santa records and then will also play a few new BotSC songs as well in celebration and in honor of the Sub Pop record label’s 25th Silver Jubilee. The SP25 will take place in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood on Saturday, July 13, 2013 . This is not a TAD reunion in any shape or form nor will there likely ever be one but fans of the band TAD and people who missed them while the band was together will have the opportunity to catch some of the old songs.

Additionally, BotSC are currently putting a few final touches on their own debut full release, tentatively titled “Empires Of Dust” and will be finished and ready to hand over to our mixing engineer if I ever get off of my ass and take care of the last details for the Bros debut. We will have enough material to release a double gate-fold vinyl album. Details to follow soon.

And finally, Mr. Jon Pettibone will be entering Witch Ape next week to finish vocals on the next Heiress record and Denver’s doom lords Royal Talons begin tracking their next full length at the end of the month.

Please help our friend and ex-BotSC drummer Mr. Aaron Edge who has been diagnosed with MS. He is currently residing in Portland Oregon with his lovely wife and is undergoing a living hell of medical procedures and excessive medical bills. Go to: HERE for more info and to donate via PayPal. Thanks in advance!

P.S. Please send positive thoughts and actions to Aaron and to our friends and families in Boston.

Acoustic drums

DrumsI am from the school of thought that a snare drum should have a serious crack to the attack and a good throaty girth that seems to live in the low-mids.  Piccolo snares are great in funk, salsa, latino and orchestral applications when used sparingly but they don’t have a commanding sound in rock, punk, hardcore, metal, black metal and the like. I personally think that a snare drum should sound like a clap of thunder not a five year old banging on a coffee can with a cooking spoon.

One of the things that I ask of bands before they record is that they MUST have new heads on the drums and new strings on all stringed instruments a day or two prior to recording. This can be especially demanding on a drummer’s budget as the price of drum heads and cymbals are costly. However, the old saying, “Garbage in, garbage out,” really does ring true in a recording situation. I have found that quite a few drummers really are challenged by the idea of how to properly tune drums themselves and find the voice of each drum and what I call “golden range voicing” for each individual drum.  For example, you could ask a flute player to play a tuba part but you will definitely not hear or feel the low-end rumble and air move that a tuba can make. I have found it helpful to have a drumming background and I do know how to properly tune a drum and seat the drum head to the drum itself. There is a window of time that any drum will sound great if properly tuned and re-tuned throughout a recording session but it is short-lived as a drummer who really works the drums over and hits hard can make a drum head go past it’s sweet spot and into the used up and lifeless stage within a couple of hours or less.

There is a lot of work that goes into making a set of drums sound good to the human ear, and quite a different beast to make it sound great in a recording. Phase coherency among the drum mics can be really challenging. Drums being out of phase with themselves between the mics can make or break a recording and if the source miking technique isn’t really scrutinized and experimented with, drums can sound thin and lifeless. To a degree, drums are always out-of-phase with themselves by nature and not a lot can be done to prevent this from happening but with extra care and diligence a lot of little tweaks can make all the difference in the world. I actually spend the lion’s share of a bands set up time on miking the drums for this reason and I take more time tuning the drums and playing around with moving the drum mics around slightly until I hear something I like. One of the symptoms of drums being out-of-phase with themselves is sounding thin and lifeless. I play around with mic placement to minimize phase cancellation and listen for when the drums sound their fullest vs. when they sound thinner.  Recording a full set of drums is an art form unto itself and at the very least challenging. Sometimes less mics on drums are better to insure phase coherency and also may be a consideration if the band is pressed for time or budget constraints.

Generally, the more time spent on preparation before the record button is pressed the better the end result will be. This concept applies to rehearsals prior to recording as well. I actively encourage a band to demo their songs before coming to the studio even if it’s a quick and dirty two-track cassette recording or a cell phone/mp3 demo so the band can hear what the song structure sounds like and what the songs are actually doing as a whole while they are not playing the songs. Listener’s perspective can be very telling and often times a song will sound different than when you are actually playing the music.

Norska

Norska guys are among some of the raddest human beings that walk this ground that we all share. I have to say that I have a soft spot for burly-bearded dudes that are kind to all living beings. Guys like Joe Preston, Mike Scheidt, Dave French, Chad Remains, Brett Netson…… I could go on and on ’till we are all yawning and begging to be tazered to break the monotony. Enough shameless name droppage and bromancing.

norskaJim Lowder, Dustin & Aaron Rieseberg and Jason Oswald make up the whole of this rock machine with veins of Metal/Sludge/Doom running deep into the dark recesses and psyche of this vast inner-earthed feel and tone. The Rieseberg brothers alone are a force of nature not unlike the tenacity of a feral cat in an abandoned warehouse down by the railroad tracks of any small town; but with spirit the size of a herd of grizzlies at a salmon feed when the steelhead come inland to spawn. The aforementioned Mr. Jim Lowder’s voice is gravelly and brisk and although he has a screaming edgy voice at times it isn’t another screaming growling trendoid voice that has pretty much ruined a lot of really good metal for the last 15 years. I get that Jim can actually sing.

I love when a drummer is so fluid that he or she is so in-the-pocket tight that the music becomes an entity all it’s own and blends with the song writing. Jason achieves this largely because he is a talented multi-instrumentalist himself.

The guitar tones have some single coil pickup sounds that I have been digging a lot lately and the playing is tight and punchy. Norska definitely tip their hats to fellow Oregonians Yob in some of the riffing but they have their own feel and sound. I have had the pleasure of breaking bread with all of Norska on a few separate occasions and had some seriously fun conversational encounters with the band and I can say without reservation that these guys are straight up real-deal good people and musical craftsmen. Every time I sit down with Norska vinylDustin I learn something about gear, guitars, pedals, amps and other guitarist nerdery. As my grandmother would say, “The day you don’t learn something is the day you may have overstayed your welcome in this lifetime.” As a result, I can live another day.

You can buy this record at the Brutal Panda webstore and you can download this work at Norska’s bandcamp page here.

It should be noted that Adam Bradley Pike recorded and mixed the Norska recording at Toadhouse Recording Studio and he did a top notch job. Look for Adam’s band called White Orange.

Guess what? This album rules and even though this is a FREE name your own price DDL, I know that you all are going to buy the vinyl. Why? Because NORSKA is rad. Do it!
